Best Buddies International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, inclusive living, and family support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). At Carroll University, we focus on the friendship pillar through creating buddy matches with students from Carroll University and individuals in the community with IDD. We host two events per month and one monthly meeting for students to connect within our organization.

Best Buddies is the largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people worldwide with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Carroll University Big Brothers Big Sisters is a student organization on campus that is affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Milwaukee. As an organization, we support and help students interested in becoming mentors for elementary-aged children. As a mentor, you will meet with a "Little" weekly at a local Waukesha Elementary school. We also welcome students who just want to support the organization as a whole without making an individual commitment. We participate in several volunteer activities and host different events throughout the year to involve both the "Bigs" and their "Littles".

The Music Therapy Pioneers organization strives to help Carroll University students succeed by providing a welcoming space to engage in music-based activities while promoting the profession of music therapy. The organization does not provide music therapy, but rather promotes it through advocacy and community building. The organization is open to majors and non-majors.

MTP has weekly meetings that offer attendees a variety of opportunities to engage with music in a non-academic context and learn more about music therapy.

Benefits for non-music therapy majors include:
1) Learn more about music therapy!
2) Make music in a low-pressure setting at any skill level (sheet music reading skills not required!)
3) Play instruments owned by the music therapy department and MTP during weekly meetings with support from music therapy majors
4) Support mental health via engagement with music (musical engagement may activate almost all brain regions and networks, assist with self-regulation, and increase social connection)

1) Build connections with music therapy upperclassmen for academic support
2) Possible coverage of fees for conference or CMTEs
3) A safe non-academic space to hone musical skills and musical leadership skills
4) A space to practice advocating for and promoting music therapy

6) Self-care via music engagement without academic evaluation (Many music majors often find music becoming something they "have" to do rather than something they "want" to do, given academic pressures, which can negatively impact their mental health and their relationship with music. Through campus-wide events and volunteering, SALUD aims to demonstrate that culture is not secondary to language. We hope to help students learn how to adapt to working with patients of another culture and to expose students to cultural norms that differ between cultures (such as ways to show respect). These skills are fostered by providing on- and off-campus opportunities for students interested in both Spanish and the Health Sciences that allow them to use their language skills, interact with Hispanics in the community, and connect with professionals in the field.

Carroll University's new interdisciplinary program offers students who are interested in Spanish and the Health Sciences an opportunity to prepare themselves for careers in a high-demand field.

According to a recent Wisconsin Registered Nurse Survey Report, only 11% of Wisconsin nurses spoke Spanish in 2012. As Hispanic populations in the United States continue to grow, the need for more bilingual health care providers is growing faster than ever.

In the SALUD program, Spanish and the Health Sciences are combined in coursework, cultural events, community service opportunities, a student organization and specialized international travel programs.
