This engaging, interactive activity focuses on the intersection of civility and democracy by educating participants about the policies and social norms—both historical and contemporary—that have shaped social resistance and fostered transformative change in America. Through group-centered discussion, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how social movements challenge dominance while advancing democratic values.

Carroll University

Mohammed I.T. Bey, MS, is the Vice President for Community Culture at Carroll University. Mohammed started his tenure in higher education in 2006 and has experience working in the four-year private/public and two-year technical/community realms. His background in higher education spans from Admissions and Financial Aid, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and Human Resources to currently serving as a member of the President’s Cabinet overseeing efforts related to mission, social justice, and equity. Before 2006, Mohammed worked in manufacturing.



Mohammed holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and Quality from Marian University of Fond du Lac. He also has plans to finish his doctorate in Leadership and Learning, which he began at Vanderbilt University. Mohammed is a Certified Kohler Company Facilitator, proficient with both small and large group dynamics.
